What to know about your first Canadian tax return

As a newcomer to Canada, your tax residency usually starts on the date you establish significant residential ties in Ontario (such as a home and spouse or dependants in Canada). For your arrival year, you report worldwide income earned after that date and Canadian-source income earned before it, and your federal non-refundable tax credits are prorated by the number of days you were resident in Canada. Filing on time by April 30 also lets the CRA calculate GST/HST credit and Canada Child Benefit payments, and starting in your second year of residence you must file Form T1135 if your specified foreign property cost more than CA$100,000 at any time in the year. When you are ready to send your slips, use my secure document upload page.

Estimates only. Not tax advice. This tool gives general information and rough figures based on the inputs you enter. It cannot see your full facts. Please speak with a qualified professional before you act on a result. Everything runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent to me or stored.
